Well we arrived at the race hotel in Tizzy at 1am Friday morning. I think I am starting to get the hang of this travel thing... apart from the staying well, I always seem to get a little sick after travelling. But lucky it didnt get any worse than a sore throat and runny nose! The town really loves this race. They spent all day friday setting up the finish chute and race course just below our hotel only to have it all blown down in a massive thunder storm that afternoon, it was quite scary, it even bew glass out of a window...
So race day! I knew I could have a good race here, but I didnt want to think about that, I just stuck to the mantra that this is the time to have a really hard training session, this is when you dont have anything to save your energy for, this is race day - Pete - I get what you mean about "saving it for race day". This really seemed to keep me calm and focused only on the swim, bike, run.  I swam well, coming out in around 5-6 place. Its good that I can still be near the front of a the swim even though I feel like I have been doing hardly any work on my swimming.
Onto the bike I was in a group of about 7-8 girls. With a big group behind. We had enough of a gap to make it work, but with only 3 girls (me included) trying to get away, it doesnt really last. So a big group came together and I just stayed near the front and started saving my energy for the run. I forgot to mention that Sara Mclarty was up the road earning all the swim and bike bonuses...  - $500US each! Coming off the bike I was near the front in the middle. I realised to late that I should have been on the side where my bike rack was, in this race that would have been teh right hand side. But it was ok this time and now its stuck in my head for next time. Had a quick transition and started running.
I was slightly worried as I had hoped I would be in a group that got away on the bike and it wouldnt come down to a run race. But I just stuck to my idea that this is the time to run as hard as I can, there are no other times you get to run untill it hurts and then keep running some more, in a strange way I was excited about it! I found it really hard to go out as fast as the other girls, I didnt let it get to me too much and just concentrated on relaxing. So the first lap I found myself slipping back through the feild and running felt uncomfortable... but towards the end of the first lap some thing clicked and I started to feel good then I just felt better and better. It was funny running back past all the girls who had passed me earlier, this never happens to me so I was quite excited. The only annoying thing is my left foot started to go numb, then the calf, untill eventually the whole leg went numb.. this has happened before but in both legs, so I suppose I should be grateful it was only the one this time... But it is such a weird feeling when you dont know what you leg is doing, I just hoped it was moving as fast as the other one! So I finished in 15th place, less then 2mins behind the winner and with a run time of 36.01.
I am pretty happy as I thought it would take me at least a few more years to be running like the other girls. Only half a year ago I did my first Standard Distance race, I remember thinking that 10k was such a long way to run. So far this year I have improved my run time at every race. So huge thank you to my awesome coach Peter Bennetts!
Now I head back to Germany for two weeks, then I Travel to Switzerland to race Lausanne Sprint World Champs! They also have Team World Champs the day after, hopefully I get a spot in a team as that would be heaps of fun to race!
