Cairns - City in a garden.

May 3, 2011
This is what I saw on a sign out riding yesterday. I am not quite sure where they got that motto from... but on the other hand our accommodation is certainly an oasis!

Flying in on Sunday and what I have seen so far from being out training, Cairns is not what I thought it would be like. Quite hilly and a lot of bush. But to be honest the only thing I knew to expect was the heat and I am not disappointed.
Camp so far has been great. I cant wait to get a few more days into it and used to the heat, as at the moment I feel like I have never run before in my life!
Apart from the rather hostile locals, the riding so far has been awesome!
We are yet to swim as yesterday was a public holiday, Labour Day? Which meant the pools were closed.
Sadly the open water swimming options are rather sketchy due to natural hazards. There are lakes up in the mountains which we thought might be good for swimming, but we have been advised against it. Unless of course you are Steve Irwin.
Sea swimming has also been scrapped because of ‘stingers’ which are apparently 10 times worse than jelly fish and you only have about an hour to get to hospital after being stung...
So basically I have decided not to touch anything that moves or breathes.
Heres a picture of the pool we are swimming at, believe it or not thats a school pool! Pretty spiffy :P

First camp of 2011

April 29, 2011
This Sunday I am off to Cairns for a two week camp. My flight is at 6.50am so it is going to be an early start!
I am really looking forward to this camp, especially the weather, my iphone tells me its 29 degress and sunny!
After Cairns I will pop up to Seoul, Korea for an Asian Cup race before heading back to NZ for a few weeks then off to Boulder and Europe for a few months!
This race is purely just to see where I am at with my Swimming and Biking. The run will just be a steady controlled effor...

April update

April 12, 2011
I had a great swim on Sunday, from Rangitoto to St Heliers. The weather was fantastic and I had lots of laughs travelling over on the ferry! The conditions were perfect and it made a great change from pool swimming. I was pleased with my time and both my legs and wrists felt good.

Talking of my wrists, I have had minor surgery on both wrists to remove painful cysts. They are feeling better already and it is certainly going to be easier to get out of the pool now, something I have been...

Im back!

April 5, 2011
So the NZ summer is gone and Autumn is well and truly here. I feel like I have missed out on the last 2 months of great training weather, but I am really not that fussed knowing that now all the training I do will be even better thanks to a successful surgery! (so far)

On that note my training has started to ramp up again and with it comes that familar feeling of being constantly tired.
With the running I have been building up by running every second day and only increasing by 5mins at ...

Brownie Queen!

March 21, 2011
Two very exciting things have happened! Firstly I am back running and feeling good! And secondly, I won the bake off against Sam Warriner!

My first run back was10 minutes and every second day I get to increase that by 5mins at a time and so far have felt really good. I will slowly increase my time until I can run for 30 minutes and then I will stay at that level for another week or so. It feels great to be back into the routine of training and starting to think about races and travel o...

Run time!

March 16, 2011
So tomorrow I get to start running! Well I have to get the all clear first in the morning, but I am sure that is not going to be a problem as my legs feel great! Hard to think I had surgery just 6 weeks ago...... lucky I have the scars as a constant reminder!

Overdue update

March 11, 2011

Things have been going really well over the past 5 weeks since my surgery. I have been enjoying walking, swimming, cycling and aqua jogging. Next week I am going back to see my surgeon and hopefully I will get the all clear to start running and building back up to race fittness. Then I can sit down with Coach Pete and plan out an overseas racing and training adventure!

So a huge thank you to my amazing physio - Lou Johnson, my awesome support team and my understanding family for making e...

Post Op

February 3, 2011
Operation! Is it water on the knee?
No, i'ts Chronic Compartment Syndrome!
So, I got a phone call on Tuesday saying my surgery could be moved forward to Thursday, of course I jumped at the chance to get it done as soon as possible. It was also quite good as I didn't really have much time to think about it, so I am sitting, well lying here right now thinking "wow" it's actually done! It's all over, and the only way to go from here is up!
The surgery itself went really well, my surgeon Stu Wals...

A bit of an update

January 31, 2011
Big News, I will be having surgery for compartment syndrome in less than two weeks!
It will be good to get this problem fixed but it is also hard as I am missing all the early season races I had planned to race.
But there are a ton of positives to come out of having this surgery done, most of all I am looking forward to racing without worrying whether my legs will go numb or not.
I will still be going overseas to race the World Championship series races, with my main focus being the London rac...

2011

January 14, 2011
So I have had a pretty mixed start to 2011, so much has happened in just a few short weeks. This sport sure has its ups and its downs.
I raced Whangamata on the 3rd, which had some major positives and some major negatives. The race plan was purely just to "blow out the cobwebs" in the coach's words and to see how much I have improved from last year.
With no taper and some pretty solid sessions leading into the race, I had no idea how I would go.
I had a 30sec lead out of the swim and onto the ...
