Lausanne
August 25, 2010
My overseas adventure continued with a drive to Lausanne,
Switzerland on Thursday. It took around 4hrs in a van chocka with bikes,
luggage and people. We made it just in time for breifing at 5pm which
was held in the Olympic Museum! I felt pretty lucky to be there!
I like Lausanne it feels very much like Wellington waterfront and has helped suppress the feeling of unease I have had by being in landlocked Europe!
Race day (Saturday) was beautiful. Clear blue skies and temp in the high 20's.
The lake is stunning and straight accross it is the Swiss Alps, which appear to drop right into the lake.
I felt ok leading into the race. Body wise I was good as I know I am obsessive when it comes to stretching and recovering. Mentally there was alot going on (as usual). But thanks to Peter Bennetts (coach) and Pete Sanford (sports phyc), I have a clear idea of what works for me and stuck to my game plan!
I had an ok swim, the pontoon we dive off was floating so it rolled forward when all the girls went to jump off. I knew this was going to happen as the boys warned us before the race, but I still had a crap start. I was a little worried but for some reason I always manage to make it back up to near the front before the first bouy. So when I knew I was ok, the rest of the swim went quick.
I had a good transition and was right near the front, but had a little dumb moment getting a shoe on and dropped a wheel in front of me, so I had to bust a gut to get back on. As soon as I did we hit the hill... haha. Well, I fell off the bunch I just managed to catch, but lucky the bunch behind wasn't too far back. So I hooked in there and we ended up catching the bunch I fell off. Phew.
Then I just hung around near the front and felt better and better. I ended up leading the climbs whilst sitting spinning up the hill and the other girls were out of the saddle. It was kinda funny when one girl yelled at me to get out of the saddle. Uh, no thanks I'm fine.
Heading into T2 I made sure I got off the bike right at the front of the bunch.
But of course I just had to struggle getting my run shoes on!
So I started running. I wanted to get into my run rhythm straight away so I got my mantra playing in my head.... "run like you are on the tredmill, run like you are on the tredmill" haha.
I used this one in Tizzy aswell, it seems to be working.
But maybe a bit too well...
I went out a little too fast for me, but hey if you never try you will never know!
I faded a little bit towards the end of the run.
But to be honest I am totally stoked with how my run is progressing.
During a race at the start of the year I remember someone saying I had "mastered the art of the fast jog..." Nice.
So I finished 20th. Top 20 at an Elite World Champs I am happy with that. It was a tough course and a fast race and I felt I handled it quite well.
Tomorrow is the Team World Champs. NZ has two teams in the race. I am in the 2nd team with Rebecca Kingsford, Callum Millward and Tom Davison.
I will be going first for our team, eek.
It is a super sprint, so 275m swim, 6km bike and a 1.5km run.. then you tag the next person in your team and they go for their 20mins of pain (or however long it takes).
So I am having fun, and looking forward to tomorrow. Race start is 2.30pm and the weather is meant to be even better than today!
Kind regards - Teresa.
